The charity provides almhouses in the town.

In that time he has been chairman and vice chair.

He has been congratulated for his work and was given a card and gifts in recognition.

Mr Wheeler said: “I joined Thatcham Parochial Charity and was a very new member of Cold Ash Council

“They needed a new volunteer to take on responsibility and I like to help people.

“The best moments are when trustees are helping people at every meeting and understanding their needs.”

He added: “I really used to enjoy visiting many who needed help at Christmas.

“The charity has 14 properties and we select those most-in need to house them.

“We also maintain the property.

“I have retired from the position after 55 years’ service which I enjoyed every moment of.

“However due to my age and mobility felt it was time to step back.”
