Lord Winston opens new science hub at Compton school

The Hubble Centre comprises 12 purpose-built laboratories, computer areas and preparation rooms. The £4.3m scheme was funded by West Berkshire Council.
Headteacher Chris Prosser outlined the lengthy journey to get to this stage and thanked the school and council staff involved, and Kier construction for minimising the impact on the school while the building work took place.
Mr Prosser also said the new facilities had made a difference to the school as a whole because the space freed up by the building enabled the school to create other exciting learning areas.
Lord Winston unveiled a plaque and spoke to pupils and guests about the importance of science. He said he admired all disciplines, arts, social science and science, as all were equally valuable, but for him the team work that today’s science breakthroughs involve and the help science gives to people, either through combating disease or making life easier with technology and new materials, made him choose a career in science.
He entertained the audience with stories from his career and was then shown around the facilities.
Mr Prosser said: “It was a wonderful occasion made even more memorable for the school by the presence of, and formal opening by Lord Winston, such a leading scientific personality of our time.”
Lord Winston is emeritus professor of fertility studies at Imperial College London and is known for his award-winning BBC programmes and books.
