Lorry driver has lucky escape after M4 accident between Newbury and Hungerford
According to Lee Glover, watch manager of Blue Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump from Newbury, and two more, from Hungerford and Lambourn fire stations,together with the heavy rescue unit from Tilehurst, were called at 8.37pm to the M4 westbound between junctions 13 and 14, after an accident involving a 40ft LGV.
The driver was travelling eastbound, before the vehicle swerved through the central reservation, overturned on its side and slid onto the opposite carriageway, blocking all three lanes of the westbound carriageway.
“When we got there, the driver had got out,” said Mr Glover.
No other vehicles were involved.
The incident damaged the fuel tank of the lorry and some 50 litres of diesel were spilt on the westbound carriageway.
Firefighters used an Environment Agency grab pack to contain/soak up the leak.
The westbound carriageway and also one lane of the eastbound carriageway were closed after the incident.
Police and ambulance services were also in attendance.
Firefighters left the scene after just over two hours.

The M4 was fully re-opened by 11.24am today (Wed) Thames Valley Police have confirmed.
