Love in the air at The Hurst School as pupils deliver roses to raise money for prom
Love was in the air at The Hurst School in Baughurst as Year 11 prefects hand-delivered roses to pupils across the school, raising hundreds of pounds for their school prom.
The group behind the idea – Seb Groom, Alicia Corbett, Talia Knop, Scarlet Smith, Will Chave and Emma Hall – wanted to raise money to put towards their prom, which will celebrate the end of the Year 11 students’ GCSEs and also mark the end of their time at The Hurst.
Talia said: “We had a meeting to discuss ways in which we could raise money for the prom, and with Valentine’s Day coming up we decided to sell roses to students for £2 each."
The organisers gave every tutor group across the school slips of paper where students had the opportunity to purchase a rose, and write an accompanying message to their Valentine for a £2 charge.
Students could choose whether to include their name on their message, or to send the rose anonymously.
The prefects then spent two evenings after school handwriting and attaching the messages to the roses, before hand-delivering more than 180 blooms to the lucky recipients at the start of the school day on February 14.
More than £360 was raised to be put towards the organisation of the prom.
Seb said: “This initiative has proved particularly popular with our Year 7 and Year 11 students and I am really impressed with how many students have taken part and we have raised a lot of money.”
Headteacher Jayne McLaren said she was proud of the pupils for coming up with the initiative.
She said: “This has been a brilliant project for our students to get involved in and I am particularly proud that they wish to use the money raised to support all the students for the end of year prom.”
