Love your leftovers at Hungerford Food Festival

The contest encourages families to share their favourite leftover recipes using food that would otherwise end up in the bin.
Finalists will get the chance to cook their dishes at the Hungerford Food Festival on Sunday, September 29.
West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for the Environment, Dominic Boeck (Con, Thatcham and South Crookham), said: "The competition is part of the local Love Food, Hate Waste campaign which aims to combat the issue of UK families throwing away 7.2 million tonnes of food waste a year, most of which could have been eaten. I'm looking forward to seeing the creative ways in which Hungerford residents are enjoying their leftover food."
To enter, take inspiration from your fridge or cupboards and send in your recipes to be judged, including ‘a before and after’ photo.
Recipes must be sent in no later than Monday, September 16.
One early entrant, Hungerford resident Val Montgomery, said she remembers her mother mincing up a Sunday roast to make a cottage pie on Mondays.
She added: “I’m a grandmother now and I’ve always used up leftovers like my own mother. I’m so pleased that my thrifty habits are back in fashion.”
Another local resident, Brian Quinn, said: “I always threw away my leftover food automatically, without even thinking I could still use it. I didn’t realise how easy it was to turn my leftover curry into a spicy soup for lunch the next day. And my leftover mash is perfect for fishcakes.”
There are four categories for entries: Savoury dishes (11-16yrs); Savoury dishes (17yrs and up); Sweet dishes (11-16yrs); Sweet dishes (17yrs and up).
Recipes must include leftovers and can also include store cupboard staples.
The event is sponsored by Doves Farm, in partnership with West Berkshire Council and Veolia Environmental Services.
