'Lucky escape for Newbury driver of 'speared' vehicle

A Mother's Day morning could have ended in tragedy after a Ford Mondeo, travelling southbound on the A339, collided with a lamp post in the central reservation, knocking it over and sending it straight through the Land Rover's windscreen and out through the rear window.
This picture, sent to NewburyToday by Martin Maynard, shows just how lucky the people in the Land Rover were.
Mr Maynard said he was walking near the bridge when he heard two crunches, which he thought was a two-car pile up but was instead confronted with the skewered Land Rover.
Mr Maynard said that the driver of the Land Rover was very lucky and seemed OK.
A spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service, Matthew George, said that it was amazing that no one needed hospital treatment.
Thames Valley Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident, to phone the 101 number.
