M4 not expected to fully reopen until 4pm

Repair work continues after cement mixer overturned on Tuesday afternoon

ONE lane of the M4 eastbound carriageway between junction 11 for Reading and 12 for Theale will remain closed until at least 4pm today.

The road was completely closed for 14 hours - from 1pm on Tuesday until 5am this morning (Weds) - after a cement mixer overturned, causing chaos and gridlock on the road during the busy rush hour period.

One motorist, Ian Metcalfe, reported it taking five and a half hours to get from Newbury to Earley.

Emergency work to repair the damaged carriageway took place overnight and one of the lanes was reopened at 4.35am today. The second lane was reopened at 5.45am.

The Highways Agency said it hoped the third lane would reopen at 4pm, but said it was "out of its control" as it was waiting for the concrete on the central reservation to set.

There are curently no delays reported on the road.
