MAC's cafe reviewed for alcohol license today

Owner of the Padworth pit-stop on Bath Road, Raff Vigliotti, said roadworks to the surrounding areas in recent months have decreased custom by up to 60 per cent and increasing opening hours and offering the sale of alcohol and an evening menu to cater to Friday and Saturday night customers was important in helping the business.
“What I have been trying to do is find my market on weekends,” said Mr Vigliotti “If you are having a plate of spaghetti you don’t want to drink a Coca-Cola, you want a glass of wine.”
The latest application has sparked concerns that in supplying alcohol Mr Vigliotti will be encouraging diners, often long distance lorry drivers and commuters, to drink and drive, however he has quashed these claims arguing he is simply trying to increase his clientele, with drivers welcome to stop overnight in the designated area to the rear of the cafe.
“It’s not going to be a discothèque,” he said. “During the day I will keep it with the standard menu.
“People think I want to have a boozer here, it’s certainly not a boozer.”
The application comes just weeks after the Newbury Weekly News reported fears for the cafes future as planning permission was sought to demolish it in favour of a new residential development which, if approved, would be home to 12 houses.
However, the application was withdrawn and focus has been turned instead to increasing the clientele of the cafe.
The application is to go before West Berkshire Council’s licensing sub-committee on Monday.
