Major housing development in Tadley nears completion
It is hoped that the first homes at the Bellway-owned site will be occupied by March. Previously known as Boundary Hall, the site, which is situated at a gateway into the town, is now being called Titherley Park, although the local authority will ultimately decide upon its address.
Bellway spokesman Julian Kenyon said: “The show home launch is anticipated for November 16 and, subject to sales rate, we would anticipate to complete all works by the end July 2014. Our first occupations are anticipated for March 2013.
A total of 114 new homes will be available, comprising a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, and three- and four-bedroom houses.
Last year, the Government rejected health and safety concerns about the site, which lies 500 metres from the boundary of the Atomic Weapons Establishment, which provides warheads for Britain's nuclear deterrent, Trident.
Before approval of the planning application, a public inquiry took place, led by Inspector Philip Ware, whose recommendations were subsequently submitted to the then Secretary of State, Eric Pickles, in 2011.
Before that, the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate had voiced its concerns that population levels within the inner detailed emergency planning zone, the area within a 3km distance from AWE, was already at maximum limits, and additional housing could hamper the deployment of emergency services and prevent the area from being easily evacuated in the event of a nuclear incident.
However, Mr Pickles said that the chance of any nuclear incident at the site was an extremely remote possibility and was outweighed by other considerations, such as the need for more housing, employment opportunities and the improvement of the site.
