Philip Brown Violins celebrates 40 years of fine craftsmanship
For 40 years, musicians have been coming
to one Newbury business
for all their repairs, res-
toration and rental needs.
Philip Brown is an inter-
nationally renowned bow
maker and violin restorer
and is celebrating four dec-
ades of “dedication to craft-
ing sound” in the town – and
around the world.
From its humble begin-
nings in a small West Mills
workshop, Philip Brown
Violins has evolved into a
“well-established, trusted
partner for musicians”.
To help celebrate its 40th
birthday Mr Brown wel-
comed the mayor of New-
bury Andy Moore to his
Cheap Street workshop, giv-
ing him an insight into the
craftsmanship and expert-
ise that has come to define
Philip Brown Violins.
The business offers
instruments for sale that
range in price from £750
right up to £500,000 and has
welcomed professional and
amateur musicians, teach-
ers, soloists and orchestras
as customers through the
years.
“Leanne kicked off the
visit by introducing the ori-
gins of the business and
showcasing the wide range
of instruments and services
we offer,” said Mr Brown,
talking about the mayor’s
visit.
“I then shared my passion
for bow making, and dis-
cussed the various woods
used in violin making.
“Renato provided a fas-
cinating overview of the
materials used in instru-
ment restoration, while
Hanna proudly presented
her work on a bow she has
been restoring.
“We are very proud of
what the business has
achieved over the last 40
years and look forward to
the future with excitement,
ready to continue crafting
sound for generations to
come.”
Philip Brown Violins also
stocks a range of bows,
including 18th-century ori-
ginals, and the staff are able to
carry out restoration on cel-
los, violins, violas and bows.
Mr Brown also organises
local recitals and workshops
for customers, teachers and
students.
