The 47-year-old, of Langford Way, Thatcham, faces four charges.

Specifically, Nicholls faces three charges of assaulting three police officers by beating them.

Then, he is charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

All four offences were said to have happened in Newbury on April 24.

Magistrates adjourned the case until a later date, when Mr Nicholls will be expected to appear and to enter pleas to all four charges.

He was meanwhile granted bail on condition that he does not enter any licensed premises in Newbury town centre.
