The 57-year-old, of Abbotts Road, Newbury, faces four charges.

First, he is accused of assaulting Rachel Parry-Balikci, thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm, in Newbury on February 9.

Next, Mr Balikci is charged with threatening her with a knife on the same occasion.

Thirdly, he is accused of threatening to kill Ms Parry-Balikci, intending that she would fear he would carry out the threat, also on the same occasion.

Finally, Mr Balikci is charged with assaulting Ms Parry-Balikci by beating her in Newbury on January 4.

Magistrates declined further jurisdiction and sent the case to be dealt with by a judge and, in the event of a trial, by a jury sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Mr Balikci, who was legally represented by Catherine Brymer, was meanwhile denied bail and was remanded in custody.
