The 29-year-old, of New Stocks Farm travellers’ site in Paices Hill, Aldermaston, faces eight charges in all.

Specifically, Mr Cole is accused of a non fatal strangulation offence in that he is said to have intentionally strangled Kayleigh Field on March 7 last year.

He is also said to have assaulted her, thereby causing her actual bodily harm, on the same occasion.

Next, Mr Cole is charged with causing Ms Field actual bodily harm on January 21, 2022.

Furthermore, he is accused of repeatedly or continuously engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive between January 1, 2021 and December 6 last year.

More specifically Mr Cole is said to have isolated Ms Field by controlling who she could see and by controlling her phone use, knowing that behaviour was having a serious effect on her.

Mr Cole faces a further charge of assaulting Ms Field by beating her on November 24 last year.

He faces one more charge of assault causing actual bodily harm to Ms Field, this time on June 2, 2022.

Finally, Mr Cole faces two charges of causing criminal damage to her property - a fence and phone equipment - between August 1 and November 24 last year.

All the offences were said to have been committed in Bradfield Southend.

Mr Cole, who was legally represented by Adonis Daniel at the hearing, was told that all the above matters would be sent to Reading Crown Court to be dealt with by a judge and, in the event of a trial, by a jury on a date to be fixed.

Mr Cole was meanwhile released on bail with conditions.
