The woman, in her 60s, was kicked into the canal and later helped out of the water. She did not sustain any serious injuries.

The man is then understood to have turned on police officers responding to the incident.

The incident took place at the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal, alongside Toomers Wharf and opposite the Canal Bar, at 5.30pm yesterday (Tuesday).

The suspect remains in police custody at the current time.

Investigating officer police constable Ryan Tench said: “I am appealing to anybody who witnessed this incident to please get in touch.

“We believe the towpath was busy at the time of the offence and there are a number of people who will have seen what happened who have not yet spoken to police.

“We have made an arrest in connection with this incident and our enquiries continue today.”

Police urge anyone with information to call 101, quoting reference 43250356463.
