Police arrest man after incident closes Cheap Street in Newbury

A 26-year-old man from Basingstoke was detained by police yesterday (Sunday), following an incident that resulted in the closure of Cheap Street through the early hours of the morning.

Multiple police cars and fire engines at the street in Newbury town centre, which was cordoned off for a number of hours.

Thames Valley Police have now confirmed that they attended the scene after a man was spotted on the roof of a building.

A spokesperson said: "Thames Valley Police was called to a report of a man on the roof of a building in Cheap Street at around 2.10am yesterday (17/10).

"Officers attended and the man was brought down from the roof.

"A 26-year-old man from Basingstoke was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and using threatening/abusive/insulting words/behaviour with intent to cause fear of/provoke unlawful violence.

"He has since been released under investigation."
