Man arrested following racist incident in Newbury

Police appealing for witnesses

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after a racially aggravated public order offence in Newbury.

At around 8.20pm on Tuesday (24/5) a man was outside of the Kennet Centre multi storey car park entrance, Bartholomew Street when he was approached by a man who racially abused him.

A passing man and woman intervened to help the victim and that man was then assaulted by the same offender.

The victim who was racially abused walked off in the opposite direction of town.

The offender is a white man, in his early twenties, around 5ft 5ins tall, of a slim build.

A man has since been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident.

Investigating officer, PC Andy Murray of response team based at Newbury police station said: “This was a busy area with people passing by. I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed these incidents to come forward.

“I would also like to appeal to the victim to contact police. If you have any information please contact me via Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 101.
