Man charged after daylight Newbury robbery

The brutal assault happened at 9.45am on Wednesday, May 15, as the 91-year-old company owner was returning to his nearby office from the NatWest bank in Northbrook Street.
Earlier police reports incorrectly stated the victim was in his 80s.
As he was walking past Costa Coffee, he was attacked from behind and struck on the head.
He fell, stunned, to the concrete as the robber grabbed his briefcase, said to have contained a substantial amount of cash, and ran off along the canal towpath towards Victoria Park.
The victim was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.
A colleague of the victim, who does not want to be identified, said: “We were all completely horrified that this could happen to anyone in broad daylight, let alone such an elderly gentleman.
“Thankfully customers at Costa immediately ran to help him. A local shopkeeper who recognised him ran to tell us. When I got there he was conscious but still on the ground and dazed.”
The colleague added: “He was kept in hospital overnight and needed stitches to a head wound. We’re shocked and very upset. He is pretty shaken up, as you can imaging, but we hope he’ll make a full recovery.”
Police subsequently announced that a man has been arrested and charged with robbery.
