Man charged with murder of baby in Newbury




A MAN has been charged with murder following the death of a one-month-old baby in Newbury last year.

James Lawton, aged 27, of Boreham Field, Warminster, Wiltshire, has been charged with one count of murder and GBH with intent following the death of Colby Lawton.

Police officers were called to an address in Fountain Gardens, Ashridge Court, by South Central Ambulance Service at about 1.50am on May 9, 2020, following reports that a one-month-old baby boy was in cardiac arrest.

The baby was taken to hospital for treatment but later died.

He was formally identified as Colby Lawton, who was born on 10 April, 2020.

On May 14 last year, a man and a woman, both from Newbury, were arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with this investigation.

They were later released on bail.

Yesterday (Tuesday), they were rearrested.

Mr Lawton has been charged with one count of murder and GBH with intent in relation to the incident.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday).

A 25-year-old woman from Newbury has been released on bail.
