Man charged with stealing taxi with child inside

A 48-year-old man from Upper Bucklebury was charged on December 23 with aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle on a road/public place without third party insurance.
The incident occurred on December 18 outside Hetherton’s Bakery, Bartholomew Street, shortly before 12.15pm and the black Peugeot in question had been found abandoned in Prospect Place by 12.23pm.
The mother was said to be inside the bakery at the time, however this has not been confirmed by police.
A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman, Hannah Williams, said the child was unharmed in the incident.
The man has been released on bail and will appear at Newbury Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 9.
