Man facing murder charge appears in court
Simon Velvick, aged 41, of Newtown Road, Newbury, is accused of murdering 42-year-old father-of five Mark Campbell, also from Newbury.
Mr Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene last Wednesday, June 19.
A post mortem examination revealed that he died from bleeding to the brain.
Mr Velvick appeared at Reading Crown Court on Tuesday. He spoke only to confirm his name.
He did not enter a plea after the charge was read and no application for bail was made on his behalf.
Judge Zoe Smith asked whether there would be any issues surrounding the case and defence lawyer Anu Mohindru said that he believed asecond post mortem was to be carried out.
Mr Velvick was remanded in custody and is due before the court again on September 16.
Four people arrested in connection with the death have been released on bail.
A 42-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been bailed until July 22.
A 19-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of the same offence, has been bailed until July 19.
Another man, aged 20, arrested on suspicion of affray, has been bailed until July 18.
Emergency services were called to the estate at 6.26pm last Wednesday.
Floral tributes to Mr Campbell’s memory have been left at the scene with one card from “your extended family” saying: “You will always be in our hearts and never forgotten.”
As events unfolded last Wednesday residents gathered outside their homes. Many were unable to access their properties in Gaskell Mews, Ferrier Close and Howarth Court, which were closed for hours because of the incident.
Six police cars, a police van and paramedics were on the scene for several hours while a police helicopter circled over the estate.
Local Policing Area Commander for West Berkshire, Supt Robin Rickard, said: “Incidents such as this are rare in Newbury.
“We would like to thank the public for their cooperation during our investigation.”
Extra police patrols and a drop-in session for residents were also held on the estate before the weekend to reassure the community and address their concerns.
Police are urging anyone with any information to contact Det Ch Insp Hunter on the non-emergency 101 number.
