The 33-year-old, of The Frances, Thatcham, is charged with one offence – that of stalking involving serious alarm or distress.

Specifically, Beardsley is accused of stalking Hayley Welch by turning up at her address and repeatedly sending messages and voicemails which had a substantial adverse effect on her usual day-to-day activities in Newbury between January 1 and Sunday, May 11.

A lack of paperwork meant the case could proceed no further that day.

District judge Davinder Sandhu therefore adjourned it until a later date, when Beardsley will be expected to enter a plea to the single charge.

He was meanwhile denied bail and was remanded in custody.
