The 42-year-old, of Church Street, Theale, initially denied assaulting Donna Wright by beating her in Theale on Sunday, January 28.

But he later changed his plea to guilty.

Mr Hagger, who was legally represented by Paul Gilmartin, was jailed for 12 weeks.

Magistrates said an immediate custodial sentence was necessary because he had committed “an unprovoked attack of a serious nature”.

In addition, they said, it was committed in a domestic context, in the presence of children, and it was the second offence against the same victim.

Finally, magistrates pointed out Mr Hagger was subject to a community order at the time.

Last October the Newbury Weekly News reported how Mr Hagger was convicted of a that previous domestic violence attack against Ms Wright in March last year.

At the latest hearing magistrates made him subject to a three-year restraining order forbidding him from contacting Ms Wright either directly or indirectly.

Finally, Mr Hagger was ordered to pay £250 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge.
