Man jailed for savage attack in Newbury pub
'Significant sentence' was 'stark warning ' to others
A MAN has been jailed for savagely biting another man in a Newbury pub.
Thirty-six-year-old Dean Paul Long was sentenced to 12 years and six months behind bars by Judge Stephen John sitting at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, July 28.
Long admitted maliciously wounding Leslie Cook with intent to do him grievous bodily harm in the Nags Head in Bartholomew Street on June 14, 2015.
He was initially also charged with assaulting Mark Wheeler by beating him on the same occasion but this was not proceeded with.
The incident happened around 1.06am and Thames Valley Police said Mr Cook, a man in his 50s, was enjoying an evening out at the Nags Head when he was attacked by Long, who bit his nose and abdomen.
Long, who was living at the pub, was arrested that same day and was charged on September 4 last year.
Sgt James Chapman, based at Newbury police station, said: “Long viciously assaulted his victim in an unprovoked attack. The victim is still recovering from the injuries he sustained and requires ongoing treatment.”
He added: “The significant sentence handed out by the judge is a stark warning that violence will not be tolerated and intoxication provides no excuse. “
