Man left with serious injuries following GBH in Newbury town centre
The 35-year-old man was walking along Bear Lane at around 5pm when an altercation broke out with another man.
Police say that the offender punched the man in the face and then walked off in the direction of the A339.
A member of the public took the victim to the West Berkshire Community Hospital but he has been transferred to the Royal Berkshire Hospital owing to the seriousness of his injuries.
The white male offender was walking with a woman but police have no further details at this time and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Det Con Greg Hulse of Newbury CID said: “The investigation is still at a very early stage and we are still trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the assault.
“The injuries sustained by the victim are very serious and it appears that he will lose the sight in his right eye as a result of the assault.
“This is a very busy road and there would have been a lot of people around who would have potentially seen this incident and I am very keen for them to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.
“I would also be keen to speak to anyone who can provide information on the movements of the man that carried out the assault. Did you see this man either before or after the assault?”
If you have any information please contact Det Con Hulse from Newbury police station via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 101.
