Specifically the 45-year-old, of Westfield Road, Thatcham, is accused of entering a flat in Tanner Court, off Pelican Lane in Newbury, on Monday, August 14, and stealing a box and its contents.

He is further accused of possessing the Class B-controlled drug cannabis on the same occasion.

Mr Black, who was legally represented at the hearing by Joanna Benn, was told both matters were being adjourned and were being sent to Reading Crown Court to be dealt with by a judge and, in the event of a trial, by a jury on a date to be fixed.

Mr Black was meanwhile denied bail and was remanded in custody.
