Man raises money for Sue Ryder in memory of late mother

A man from Greenham stood outside Tesco on Pinchington Lane last week to raise money in memory of his late mother.

Andrew Johnston raised more than £1,300 for Sue Ryder on Tuesday, December 20, and Wednesday, December 21, shaking a bucket and meeting the community.

Mr Johnston and his family were supported by Sue Ryder after his mother Joan was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Joan died in April 2021 at the age of 77 and her son said the charity went “over and beyond” to make his life easier – while in the midst of the pandemic.

He said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of those he met last week and found comfort in hearing stories of how Sue Ryder has helped others.

He said: “I want to thank the people who were so generous and kind during times that are hard for everyone, with the heating costs and the cost of living.

“I want to thank Tesco for letting me be up there, the manager was great and they have supported me.

“I have just been overwhelmed.”

After standing outside the store for eight hours each day, he spent a further three hours counting every note, pound and penny which will be handed over to Sue Ryder in due course.

This isn’t Mr Johnston’s first time collecting for his mother.

He walked from Newbury to Hungerford last year and received a letter of recognition from Newbury MP Laura Farris.

He hopes to stage another walk in the future.
