Man remanded in custody accused of attempted rape in Newbury

Detectives have appealed for a taxi driver who picked up a fare nearby to contact them.
Police were alerted to an incident shortly after 3am on Friday, in which a teenage woman was allegedly attacked in or near the park.
The area near Park Lane was still cordoned off with police tape by mid morning.
Det Sgt Neil Williams said: “We’re trying to identify a private hire taxi driver who took a lone male to Hermitage at that time as we think he, or she, could have information to help us with our investigation.”
Detectives are specifically interested in a driver who picked up a fare between 2.20am and 3.30am on Friday in or around the Robin Hood Roundabout, Shaw Road or Long Lane.
The suspect, who is in his 20s and lives in Hermitage, was arrested on Friday and appeared before magistrates in Reading on Monday charged with attempted rape.
He was also charged with assaulting a 16-year-old boy who reportedly came to the aid of the alleged victim.
No plea was entered and the man was remanded in custody until Monday, September 17, when he will appear at Reading Crown Court.
A second man who was held in connection with the alleged offence has been released without charge.
Anyone who has information about the taxi fare should contact Det Sgt Williams on the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, the Crimestoppers charity can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org
