Man reported for careless driving in Newbury
Collision involving a lorry and a car in Winchcombe Road on Saturday caused heavy traffic jams
THE driver of a heavy goods vehicle has been reported by police for careless driving, following a crash in Newbury at the weekend.
The incident happened along the A339 Winchcombe Road, Newbury, at about 3.50pm on Saturday (November 5).
An Iveco heavy goods vehicle was in collision with a silver Honda S2000.
A land ambulance attended the scene and the 26-year-old male driver of the Honda was taken to the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital with suspected multiple fractures to his right arm.
The driver of the lorry, who was reported to be uninjured, has been reported by police to the Crown Prosecution Service for careless driving.
The incident resulted in traffic gridlock around Newbury town centre, particularly on the A339 near Sainsbury's.
The collision also caused damage to the central reservation on the A339.
Newbury resident, John Brodie, was caught up in the traffic following the accident.
Mr Brodie, who was trying to get to Newbury Racecourse where he was working for the Red Cross, said: “The traffic was gridlocked around the roundabout at Newbury Police Station and on the Robin Hood roundabout. Traffic was also affected coming from Hambridge Road and Kings Road.
“The staff at Sainsbury's were fabulous to inform customers there had been an accident outside the store and customers were informed to go through town to avoid Winchcombe Road.”
Thames Valley Police said they are not seeking anymore witnesses to come forward in this case.
