The 56-year-old, of Newtown Road, Newbury, admitted entering Headcase Barbers in Northbrook Street, Newbury, as a trespasser on Monday, July 17, and stealing a bag containing personal items, which he later disposed of.

Mr Phillipson, who was legally represented at the hearing by Alex Granville, was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

District judge Samuel Goozee said a custodial sentence, albeit suspended, was necessary because the defendant had a “flagrant disregard for people and their property”.

Mr Goozee also cited Mr Phillipson’s numerous previous convictions.

In addition to the suspended sentence Mr Phillipson was ordered to pay £85 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge.
