The man – who is in his thirties – was driving a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) was called to the scene by Thames Valley Police at 4.14am.

Two Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Newbury and one officer were sent to the scene, together with a crew from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service and the Heavy Rescue Unit from Theale Community Fire Station.

RBFRS said one person was found trapped but was released and placed into the care of South Central Ambulance Service.

The fire crews were at the scene for about two hours before handing over to Thames Valley Police (TVP).

TVP said the van driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains.

His next of kin have been informed and have been offered support.

TVP has completed its collision investigation.

The road will remain closed for recovery and clear up works which include assessing damage to a near side barrier and treating a spillage in lane one.

TVP is now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Sergeant Tony Jenkins, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: “Firstly, I would like to send our best wishes to the victim of this collision, who has suffered life-threatening injuries, and our thoughts are with him and his loved ones.

“I am appealing for any witnesses to this collision to please come forward.

“Also, if you were driving in the area around the time of the collision and have a dash-cam, please check your recording in case it has captured something that could assist us and get in touch if you have.”

He added: “Anyone with information or footage should call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 239 of today’s date.

“The motorway remains closed while we deal with the collision, with diversions in place.

“Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused but we hope to reopen it at around 1pm but that is subject to change.”

All lanes are still closed on the M4 westbound between junction 14 Hungerford and junction 15 Swindon.

National Highways said normal traffic conditions are expected between 3.30pm and 3.45pm today.
