Man threatened with knife during Newbury robbery

Newbury car wash employee handed over money after 'frightening' incident

A MAN was threatened with a knife during a robbery on a business in Newbury.

The victim, a 34-year-old man, was sleeping at work, Newbury Car Wash in Newtown Road, when he was woken by an intruder at about 2am on Wednesday April 22.

The intruder, who had what is believed to be a commando knife, demanded money and the victim handed over £15.

The offender then fled the scene on foot towards the town centre.

About two hours later the same offender and two other men returned to the business’ office. They tried to gain entry to the office via the front door but were unsuccessful.

Police believe that the offender was able to gain entry to the office during the first incident because the door was unlocked.

The offender with the knife is unshaven, in his thirties and about 6ft. He was wearing a light grey hooded top, with the hood over his head, light blue jeans and light coloured trainers.

The other two men were slightly shorter than the first offender.

The victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

Investigating officer, PC Robert Simpson-Jones based at Newbury police station said: “This was a frightening incident for the victim, who was disturbed while sleeping and then threatened by an offender with a knife.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw anything or anyone acting suspiciously in the area of Newtown Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning to contact the police via 101. No matter how insignificant you think the information might be, it may aid our investigation.

“If you don't want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.”
