Man threatening people in Newbury street with carving knife pinned to ground

A MAN threatening people in a Newbury street with a carving knife was pinned to the ground by several men who pounced on him and restrained him before police arrived on Tuesday evening (Feb 17).

The incident happened around 4.45pm in Elizabeth Avenue where, according to social media reports, a man was wrestled to the floor by two people and pinned down because he was ‘after someone.’

A passer-by, who did not want to be named, confirmed seeing three men pinning a man down, who was holding a carving knife and who had been allegedly threatening people in the street with the knife.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) spokeswoman, Hannah Williams, said police were called shortly after 5pm to a report of a disturbance in Elizabeth Avenue, where members of the public were detaining a man.

A 59-year-old man was arrested at the scene, on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and suspicion of affray and has been bailed until February 22.
