Man walking from Hungerford to Newbury for Sue Ryder in memory of late mother
A Greenham man is walking from Newbury to Hungerford to raise money in memory of his late mother.
Andrew Johnston’s mother Joan died in April 2021 at the age of 77 after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
Mr Johnston said he and the family were supported by Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading and he has been giving back to it since.
In the same year he raised more than £1,000 for Sue Ryder walking from Newbury to Hungerford.
Last year he raised a further £1,331 after standing outside Tesco on Pinchington Lane with a donation bucket.
He is now embarking on his second walk for the same cause.
Mr Johnston said Sue Ryder went “over and beyond” to make his life easier – while in the midst of the pandemic.
He hopes to begin his walk on July 15 at 10am at Hungerford train station.
He will walk along the canal until he reaches The Plough on the Green at Stroud Green in Newbury.
He said: “I am really looking forward to it.
“The landlady and landlord of The Plough on the Green are a really lovely couple and they said I could finish my walk at their pub.”
Sponsor forms can be found at the pub on The Folly, Stroud Green.
Mr Johnston is hoping to be accompanied by friends, family and anyone else willing to take on all or a part of the challenge with him.
He has a fundraising target of £500.
