Man wants to find 'guardian angel' who saved his life
Andrew Morton, aged 30, was in Thatcham with his girlfriend Rachel Cooke aged 29, visiting friends last weekend.
Leaving to go home on Tuesday (6), the pair stopped off to pick up sandwichs at Tesco Express on Northfield Road.
When driving down Sagecroft Road and on their way home, Mr Morton, who was in the passenger seat, started choking.
They pulled the car over and Mr Morton described himself as "really choking" and "struggling to breath".
He said: "My girlfriend was hysterical.
"I remembered shouting for help.
"I started to get really frightened."
He said that there was no one about except for one woman who was walking with a buggy across the street.
He said: "She seemed to be the only person about.
"I just remember this lady thumping my back."
With Miss Cooke unable to successfully perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre, Mr Morton's 'guardian angel' stepped into the breach.
He said: "My girlfriend had tried it but this lady did it really hard.
"My girlfriend said I turned blue but I just couldn't get it up.
"She did it nine or ten times before the food dislodged."
With the drama over and before Mr Morton was able to compose himself, the woman had disappeared.
Mr Morton said: "It was terrifying.
"I was not chewing properly and I felt it get stuck.
"When I got out of the car I was rasping and I could not cough properly.
"I thought I was going to choke to death, I was petrified - I thought, this is it."
Mr Morton added: "The woman seemed to know what she was doing.
"She saved my life."
