The 29-year-old, of Craven Road, Newbury, is accused of assaulting his victim, thereby causing her actual bodily harm, in Newbury on Monday, February 19.

Next, Mr Byford is charged with criminally damaging an iPhone belonging to her in Newbury on Friday, August 2.

Finally, he is accused of assaulting her, thereby causing her actual bodily harm in Newbury on the same date.

Mr Byford spoke only to confirm his details and to plead not guilty to all three charges.

He was told that the case was so serious it was being sent to be dealt with by a judge and jury sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Max Riley-Gould, defending, applied for bail on behalf of his client.

But district judge Samuel Goozee refused to grant bail and remanded Mr Byford in custody.
