Man who died in flood at Headley Ford has been named
Mr Gammon, aged 52 and from Kingston Lane, Teddington, died after the car he was a passenger in was swept away in flash floods in the ford on the Berkshire/Hampshire border.
Mr Gammon and his 55-year-old wife, who survived the incident but has not been named by police, were attempting to cross the ford at Thornford Road, Headley, around 9.10am on Monday (April 30).
Their silver Toyota Yaris was swept downstream about 100 metres and became submerged by flood water.
Mr Gammon’s wife was able to get out but he was recovered from the vehicle by fire and rescue crews and later pronounced dead at the scene.
A dog which was in the car also died.
Sgt Paul Plews from the Farnborough Roads Policing unit said: “Our thoughts are with his wife and family who are understandably very distressed by what’s happened.
“Our investigation is focused on establishing the events leading up to Mr Gammon’s death and we will be preparing a file for the coroner.”
The reason the couple were in the area at the time has not been stated by police.
Villagers have called for the ford to be closed, after what Headley villager, Simon Hiscock, said was “countless” similar incidents of motorists becoming stranded in the ford in recent years.
