Man who fell in river yesterday (Tues) pronounced dead at scene, say ambulance service
At 5pm, a spokeswoman for the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) Gill Hodgetts said: "The man was in his fifties.
"We declared him deceased at the scene.
"His body has been conveyed to the mortuary at the Royal Berkshire Hospital [Reading]."
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police, James Williams, added: "[The] police were called at 2.53pm to a report of a person in Bellridge Lake off Hambridge Lane, Newbury.
"The man was later pronounced dead at the scene.
"The death is being treated as unexplained but is not currently believed to be suspicious."
There was a heavy presence of emergency vehicles in Hambridge Road, including the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance, one ambulance, several police vehicles and fire pumps from Newbury and Whitley Wood as well as the water rescue unit and multi-role vehicle.
Ms Hodgetts said that SCAS had received a call reporting that a man had fallen into the river at 2.45pm.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Ellie Gray, confirmed that they were alerted at 2.50pm, and left the scene shortly before 3.35pm.
She said she believed that the man was out of the water by the time of the crews' arrival.
It is not yet known how the man came to be in the water.
