Lambourn’s Ed Pownall wins ‘one in a billion’ spherical egg at auction

A ‘one in a billion’ spherical egg that captivated the country is coming home… to Lambourn.

The chicken egg was discovered by a woman from Ayr in Scotland, who found it in a box from her local Asda store.

She got in touch with auction house Thomson Roddick Callan.

They agreed to put the egg up for sale and alerted the national media, who ran the story.

For the next part of our unlikely tale, we must go to The George in Lambourn, where one of the regulars, Ed Pownall, was enjoying a drink.

He said: “I confess I may have had a couple of glasses of red wine when it occurred to me to put in a cheeky bid.

“The next thing I knew, I’d won it for £150.”

Mr Pownall, a public relations officer for the Tote, who also performs as a comedian, then realised he had to get his new, prized possession home.

He has arranged a courier to bring it to Lambourn but admitted he hadn’t thought through what to do with it.

Mr Pownall said: “I might put it on eBay or try to raise money for charity; I hadn’t thought that far ahead, to be honest!”

The chances of finding a spherical egg have been estimated at one in a billion – but, with billions of eggs sold each day, it does happen.
