Man's lucky escape on A34 after car crashes into tree
Firefighters from 2 counties at scene
A MAN had a lucky escape on the A34 this afternoon (Sunday), after a car careered up an embankment, before crashing into a tree.
One fire engine from Newbury and two more from Oxfordshire, were called to the A34 north, between the Chilton and Milton interchanges, where a grey Hyundai Getz had left the carriageway, before going up an embankment and colliding with a tree.
Firefighters discovered the driver had managed to get out of the vehicle, but was badly shaken.
Firefighters administered first aid to the man, and provided him with oxygen, until paramedics arrived.
The car lost a wheel in the collision and which rolled to the bottom of the embankment.
The car was found halted upright on the remaining 3 wheels.
Police were also at the scene.
One lane of the carriageway was closed during the incident.
This incident was the second on the A34 over the last few days.
On Friday, at around 2pm, a crane broke down southbound on the A34 at East Ilsley, with some 100 litres hydraulic fluid spilt on the carriageway from the leaking vehicle.
The incident partially blocked the road, with congestion back to the Milton interchange.
Firefighters at the scene covered drains with special clay mats to prevent contamination of local water courses.
Three local MPs, including Newbury MP, Richard Benyon, were due to meet the roads minister to discuss safety issues on the A34, after several recent fatal collisions on the road at East Ilsley, including an horrific incident in which a mother and three children lost their lives.
