Market traders to see half-price pitches
This is the latest bid by Newbury Town Council to encourage new traders to the market.
The council is considering terminating its current market cleansing contract with West Berkshire Council, which they currently spend £45,000 on per year, whilst enticing more market traders with the cheaper pitch price and tempting more customers to the market with a larger variety of products.
If approved, the new conditions will take effect from April 2013.
Some concerns were expressed about how the co-operation of market traders would be monitored, however the idea was supported by all councillors at a Newbury Town Council community services committee on Monday.
Leader of the council, Julian Swift-Hook, described the changes as “a win, win situation. A win for the council, a win for the traders and a win for Newbury.”
