Martial arts in Headley

Headley becomes the place to go for those wishing to learn martial arts

HEADLEY has become a hub for people in the area wishing to learn the martial arts.

Among those teaching some 24 students of Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu at Headley Village Hall, is 26-year-old Daniel Goddard, of Basingstoke, from the White Dragon Chinese Martial Arts Association.

Mr Goddard took up the martial arts nine years ago when he was 18, and now he is passing on the benefit of his experience to a class of men and women of mixed ages, from their 20s to early 50s.

A typical session starts with a 20-minute warm-up of Chi Kung exercises, which are done slowly by learners trying to get their balance.

Mr Goddard, who has given Tai Chi demonstrations at Newbury's annual springtime Feelgood Fortnight events, said: “The stances get lower and lower, but beginners do it upright.”

Extra lessons could be provided in self-defence, including knife and gun defence, he added.

“Just turn up if you are interested to watch or take part,” he said.

Tai Chi takes place at Headley Village Hall, off the A339, on Wednesdays at 8pm and Thursdays at 7pm. The first session is free, then the weekly lessons cost £40 a month, plus a one-off yearly membership fee of £40.
