Master Chef's Challenge in Newbury Market Place




Masses to see and do today in Newbury and beyond

Delicious food smells will tantalise in Newbury’s Market Place this morning (Saturday) at a Master Chef’s Challenge, as the district’s Feel Good fortnight gets underway - with loads more to do elsewhere locally.

At 10.30am, the mayor of Newbury, Jo Day, will officially launch the fortnight of activities, with coffee and cake available from 10am to noon in Newbury Town Hall chambers.

Roller skating fruit and veg, 1980’s aerobic demonstrations and Olaf from Frozen will entertain, alongside music, singing and dancing, followed by the Master Chef’s Challenge, involving some of the district’s top chefs from restaurants including The Newbury, Brebis, Just Lucky’s and The Bladebone Inn, Chapel Row.

In Northbrook Street, local firefighters will be on hand to show people around a fire engine, while local groups and organisations will be demonstrating their activities and inviting people to have a go.

While in town, why not pop over to Victoria Park, where some 14 stalls offer food, beauty and children's goods, at a charity fundraising market, with free entry, 10am to 4pm.

A share of proceeds will be donated to the Charles Clore Day Unit at West Berkshire Community Hospital, run by Sue Ryder Hospice Care,

Over the Berkshire/Hampshire border, in Kingsclere, a second hand book sale will take place at Kingsclere Village Club, George Street, between 10.30am and 12.30. Entry 50p, all paperbacks 50p, with all proceeds to the Burghfield Common based, Guide Dogs charity.

Back in Newbury, a jumble sale takes place from 10am at St George’s Church Hall. hosted by New Era Players, entry 20p, or stroll over to a spring fair at St Nicolas church hall, West Mills, from 10am to 1.30pm, with hot lunches served from 11.45am and stalls selling quality products including cakes and other home made produce, with a raffle and free entry, while 11am will see the last service at the United Reformed Church in Newbury.

At 9.20am, Rugby Tots will be opened at the Francis Baily Primary School, Thatcham, by Thatcham mayor, Gary Johnson, a new children's playgroup and also in Thatcham at 10am, a new shop, Pregnancy to Babe, opens at the Old Mews, aimed at mothers-to-be in the Thatcham area.

Sports fans should head over to Bulpit Lane for a 3pm football match between Hungerford and Chesham, or alternatively a 3pm rugby match between Newbury Blues and Lighton Buzzard at Monks Lane.
