Newbury’s favourite mandomeisters return

The band Simon Mayor & Friends may have a new name but at its core are members of the Mandolinquents, Simon Mayor (mandolin, fiddle, guitar, vocals), Hilary James (vocals, mandobass) and Richard Colins (banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass).

They are joined by Florence Petit (cello) and Elias Sibley (mandolin, guitar, ukulele).

The Mandolinquents will be know to many in the Newbury area from the regular gigs they used to present at New Greenham Arts and then Arlington Arts.

And Richard Colins band The New Grass Cutters have also appeared at ACE Space and Arlington.

Simon Mayor is recognised as one of the world’s leading mandolinists and produced the definitive tutorials

In May 2000 he entered the UK’s Classical Artist Top Ten, but he is equally at home playing folk and gypsy swing.

On his recent highly-acclaimed album Carolan (fantasias on themes by Turlough O’Carolan 1670-1735) he was joined by Hilary James and Florence Petit.

Together with partner Hilary James they presented Play School and for

six years were regular hosts of BBC Music Education programmes.

They have also written more than 50 children’s songs, many for their own Musical Mystery Tour children’s CDs.

The ACE Space gig will be one of a limited number of appearances of Simon Mayor & Friends this winter.

They will play music ranging across genres delivered with wit and humour.

Simon Mayor & Friends will be at ACE Space on Saturday, January 20. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.
