Meet the mechanic's metal man

How’s this for a bit of fun, then? NWN photographer Phil Cannings came across this 17.7kg metal man, standing all of 2ft 2ins small, and made entirely from old motor parts when he took his car for an MOT.
Its creator, 41-year-old Newbury mechanic Glen Smith (pictured above), constructed his ‘Iron Midget’ from various wheel bearings, shock absorbers, the fifth gear from a Fiat Ducato, Land Rover propshaft bits, brake pipes, nuts, bolts and washers, two MIG welding canisters, motorcycles sprockets and chains, plus some fabricated metalwork for the head.
Glen, who has two young sons; Ted, aged seven, and 12-year-old George, has been in the the motortrade since he left The Clere School. He started his own business, HMC, at New Greenham Park, seven years ago.
The metal man took about three weeks to complete and Glen enjoyed making him so much, he is about to start on his next, as yet unnamed, character.
