Memorial for victims of Newbury bombings to be unveiled next month
Newbury Town Council has been working with local historian David Clow to create a memorial and information board marking the 70th anniversary of a blast which killed 15 people and seriously injured 25 others, as well as destroying local infrastructure.
It will be unveiled in St John’s memorial gardens, close to St John’s Church, Chesterfield Road, marking the spot where the first bomb landed, on Sunday, February 10 at 4pm.
The memorial will be a marble slab and will display the names of the victims.
A short service of remembrance will be held before the official unveiling by the Mayor of Newbury, Arthur Johnson.
A special exhibition about the impact of the bombing on the Senior Council School, which was destroyed in the bombings, will be held at Shaw House from February 16 to November 3.
