Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council express support for Mortimer Men's Shed project
A Mortimer man is hoping to set up a community group for retired and working men to socialise, learn craft and DIY skills and teach what they know to others.
Mike Gomm, a recently retired teacher who has lived in the village since 2005, asked for support from Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council at a meeting on Thursday, April 14.
Mr Gomm wants to set up a Men’s Shed, a local group that would be part of the national charitable association that aims to reduce loneliness and isolation among men.
The idea of a local Men’s Shed has already garnered support from other parish councils in the area, and multiple men from Mortimer, Burghfield, Sulhamstead and Ufton Nervet have expressed interest in joining if it were to go ahead.
Stratfield Mortimer Parish Council chairman Mike Dennett expressed the council’s support for the project at the meeting.
Mortimer’s disused Garth Hall has been considered as a possible location for the group to meet, as many of those interested in joining live in the village and the hall is within walking distance.
Two local shooting groups are also interested in using Garth Hall because of its rifle range.
