Michelin chef stirs up a treat at Mortimer West End pub
Italian food menu sells out
An Italian meal cooked by a Michelin-starred chef at a Mortimer West End pub triggered romantic memories for the owner.
Italian chef Massimo Camia recently rolled up his sleeves at the Red Lion pub to work alongside the pub’s chefs, including 31-year-old head chef, Marco Toso, whom he trained for six years.
Together the two chefs and staff prepared a special seven-course tasting menu for 60 customers, which sold out well in advance.
Proprietor Franco Guglielmone said: “He went straight into the kitchen to work with my team to prepare for the event.”
The evening brought back fond memories for Mr Guglielmone, who 27 years ago, while lunching with relatives, met his wife, Jane, at the pub, parts of which date back to 1650.
He has since opened four Italian restaurants and a coffee bar in the UK, before moving to Barolo in Italy, where he ran a hotel/restaurant.
Last year he discovered the Red Lion was for sale and decided to buy it, before refurbishing the kitchen.
Afterwards, Signor Camia spoke to guests at each table, who were all delighted.
Mr Guglielmone said: “They were very impressed and happy with the food and the service.”
Mr Camia, who runs Massimo Camia’s Restaurant in Barolo, is set to return in the summer.
