According to firefighter Jamie Stevens, of Greenwatch at Newbury Fire Station, one fire engine from Newbury and another from Dee Road, Tilehurst, were called at 9.05am to School Hill.
Firefighters had to break the door down to gain entry to the property, as no-one was in and after neighbours alerted emergency services, after spotting smoke coming from the roof of the house.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire with a hose reel to extinguish the fire, with flames confined to a bedroom and the house extensively damaged by smoke throughout.
The fire was extinguished by 11am, when the incident was closed by the fire service.
