Missing trees return to The Empire Cafe in Cheap Street, Newbury

Two decorative trees which disappeared from outside Newbury’s Empire Cafe in Cheap Street a fortnight ago have been returned.

Owner Wendy Berkeley – whose family took over the café and bakery in 1947 – displayed a sign on a third tree a week after the pair went missing, politely requesting their return.

“It must have taken some effort,” said Mrs Berkeley. “Someone probably would have needed a car, as they’re not light.”

The café has been trading since 1874 and is renowned for its lardy cakes.
