More changes for Bear Hotel?
The proposed changes involve new signage.
In particular, the brewery wants to add its green logo, topped with a golden crown, atop the existing pub sign.
The application also entails installing other signs and plaques around the Grade II listed building in Charnham Street.
A design and access statement by the brewery states: “Our proposal is to update the existing signage to the new Greene King brand with the introduction of a wall mounted logo and stone plaque.
“The existing brass plaques are to be replaced with new and a crowner is being added to the existing pictorial sign. These additions are to be implemented whilst still being mindful to the historic importance of the site and sensitivity to the local surroundings.”
Morgan Signs & Design Ltd, who are charged with carrying out the work, state: “We...have proposed a minimal scheme which, we hope you will agree, does not detract from the building but is complimentary to the surroundings whilst bringing the exterior up to date.
“The signage has been carefully considered from its design to preserve and enhance the special character of this listed building and, indeed, the local environment of Hungerford.”
Last April the Bear Hotel was bought by Old English Inns, a subsidiary company of Greene King, and it was subsequently refurbished.
The Bear Hotel is one of the oldest and most historic inns in England and is reputed to date back to the 13th Century.
Hungerford Town Council’s environment and planning committee is yet to consider and formally respond to the application.
